Depression -No,It's not a disease!

Today let's talk about depression. It literally means a lack of expression. Normally people perceive it as a disease but it is a normal state of mind. Wikipedia explains it as "A state of low mood and aversion(by the way it is a strong feeling of not liking somebody/something) activity, that can affect a person's thoughts, behavior, tendencies, feelings and sense of well-being".

So Why are we actually having a conversation on this state of mind? The very first reason being it is a major public health problem contributing to significant morbidity, disability as well as mortality, along with socioeconomic losses.A recent study revealed that there arises 10M cases of depression each year in India only-Sounds horrible,no?
●It affects all-children,adolescents,middle-aged groups, and the elderly -both men and women  residing in urban as well as rural areas and slums.
●Depression and suicide are closely interlinked . Recognition at early stages  is critical for reducing suicidal deaths and self-harm.
●Depressed people are often excluded by family and society which results in under performance at work and in education .
A WHO report says that depression accounts for 1/3rd of total DALYs (Disability Adjusted Life Years).

Resorting back to causes-It is normally seen as a normal temporary reaction to life events such as the loss of a loved one or, unemployment.
●Sometimes,it results as a symptom of some physical diseases(nutritional deficiencies or infectious ones) also.
●Intake of some drugs and medical treatment also leads to depression .
People who are usually marginalized due to either their gender identity or sexual orientation.
Some of the indicators of depression includes:
  • Temporary but rapid mood changes
  • Short term hopelessness
  • Loss of interest in activities
  • Sleep Disruption
  • Withdrawal from social Life and difficulties in concentration.
  • Appetite changes to name a few.

Now,the most important facet-Management of the depressed! It includes the following 4 stages:
1. Awareness-This stage includes knowledge of indicators and other facets related to depression .
2.Once we are aware,we can easily recognize the condition.
3.After recognition ,we need to ensure provision of effective and appropriate treatment, and
4. Last step is ensuring care and adequate follow up to reduce relapse and chronic illness.

That's all for the day!
Cheers to a happy and successful life!☺️☺️☺️
